Bring home your Disney memories

Designer Nitin Bal Chauhan’s fourth season at the Lakme Fashion Week Summer/Resort 2012 holds some pleasant surprises.
Tell us more about your collection?
I am working on Disney Couture collection, inspired by memories of Mickey and Minnie but aimed at adults. My collection will emphasise repetition in cuts, prints and textures. The Disney collection is high on structured styles. The colour palette is taken from the classic Mickey period — bright and retro. I am coming up with a range on denims using the latest technology. Apart from this, the accessories like bags and belts are made from leather, canvas, fibre glass and acrylic. The headgears have been made using a whole lot of materials, especially fabric, which has been moulded like clay to achieve smooth curves and shapes. I have also used wires, metallic gauze, test tubes, flowers made out of junk.
What is the collection’s USP?
This is the first time in India that Disney is coming up with a Disney Couture range aimed at adults. In the past, Disney has worked with some of the prominent international designers across the globe and Disney Couture is a success story outside India. I am excited to bring this magic to the Disney India fans. My collection will have a unique range on denims - lightweight, heavyweight, denims washed. The essence of the collection is blue.
What inspired this collection?
I am a big Disney enthusiast and have grown up watching Disney animations and comics. Animation changed the way I looked at pencil drawings — it added a new dimension to art, where any motion when drawn frame by frame, could give the illusion of movement. It is this aspect of Disney that motivated me.

What does summer/resort mean to you?

Summer/ resort wear means something comfortable and close to the sea.
Fashion is not about…
Hiding your identity or being something what you are not - it is about expressing what you are as closely as possible.
Today, a prospective buyer wants…
To stand out — needs designs and styles that are different and unique. The buyer is looking for value for money, comfort, fit, style and sometimes, that reflects the psyche of the brand.
